St Gregory's Minster

Found just south of the North York Moors National Park, Kirkbymoorside is ideally placed for exploring the North Yorkshire countryside and is a charming small market town.

A market has been held in Kirkbymoorside since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest market towns in all of Yorkshire. It takes place every Wednesday, when you can find an array of stalls laid out along the main street as well as in the traditional cobbled market place. Surrounding the marketplace, you’ll find a variety of interesting buildings, many of which date back hundreds of years. These include the timbered Black Swan Inn, a former coaching inn which was built in 1632.

Nearby Helmsley

A couple of miles outside of the village at Kirkdale lies St Gregory’s Minster, a historic Grade I-listed church from the Anglo-Saxon period, featuring a sundial set into the outer wall of the nave, engraved with an inscription in Old English.

Kirkbymoorside is the perfect base for a Yorkshire walking holiday, with several wonderful walks to be had to the town and out through surrounding Ryedale. Heading east, you can discover Ravenwick Hall, Ravenswyke Woods and Manor Vale Woods, while a three-mile-walk north will take you through woodlands and over open fields to the village of Gillamoor, with its pretty church and country pub.

The town also boasts two former castle sites, which can both easily be walked to. The first can be found within the Manor Vale woodland, and the second can be found on Vivers Mill, with wonderful views out over the town and the surrounding countryside.

If you’re after a spot of shopping in Kirkbymoorside, the town has all the essentials as well as a few other independent shops. It boasts an award-winning butcher as well as two bakeries and a delicatessen, making it ideal for self-catering holidays. If you don’t feel like cooking, you can always have a bite to eat at The Lemon Tree, a popular fish and chip shop, or The Lion Inn, renowned for its pies. The town is even home to its own clock shop, with a fine collection of locally made Yorkshire clocks.
