Lancaster has a laid-back feel and is a relaxing place to explore by foot, whether you’re heading in the direction of one of its impressive historical attractions, or browsing in the many markets and boutiques.

The countryside around Lancaster is wild and unspoilt. Empty beaches, enchanting forests and rolling hills are all easily reached from the city.

Ancient architecture

Shopping in Lancaster is a laid-back and enjoyable experience. The city is fairly small, so most of the main thoroughfares are within a leisurely stroll of each other. Don’t miss the Charter Market, which takes place every Wednesday in the city’s historic centre. Here, you’ll find jewellery, arts, crafts and clothes as well as tasty food from some of the area’s best producers.

For a glimpse into Lancaster’s fascinating past, visit Lancaster Castle. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, you’ll find one of the UK’s most striking castles, with almost 1,000 years of turbulent history to explore. Next to the castle is the Priory Church, which dates back to 1094 and is also well worth a visit.

A short walk away from the bustling city centre, you’ll discover the Williamson Park and Tropical Butterfly House. This is the highest point in Lancaster and has 22 acres of stunning parkland and play areas to explore. The park offers visitors dramatic views of the Fylde Coast and Lake District. The butterfly house is home to hundreds of dazzlingly colourful species and creates the impression that you’re on a tropical island rather than the heart of Lancashire.

Lancaster has an impressive selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants, offering almost any cuisine you could wish for.
