Medieval Suffolk village with a strong World War II heritage

The streets of Lavenham

Arriving in Lavenham is like stepping onto an olde-worlde film set. This beautiful medieval village is steeped in history whilst simultaneously offering a modern day visiting experience. Found at the very heart of Suffolk, it is the perfect place to base yourself for an East of England break. You won’t get tired of wandering around the charming village or eating cream teas in the friendly cafes.

Lavenham is associated with its WWII bomber airfield which can be visited by prior arrangement with Lavenham Tourist Information or the landowner.

Several of the runways still remain, as well as many of the buildings. Only the flight command tower has been maintained, whilst the others have been left to return to nature. Much of the former airbase is now farmland. There is a perimeter path for those that would like a stroll, which is open in daylight hours.

Open between April and October, Little Hall is a late 14th century hall house that serves as the town museum. It is owned and managed by the Suffolk Buildings Preservation Trust.

Lavenham is full of ornate houses

The English walled gardens can also be visited following existing Tudor age designs. Visit the small shops for souvenirs and guide books.

Close to Lavenham is the pretty market town of Bury St Edmunds with its wonderful riverside gardens, abbey ruins and St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Lose yourself in the cobbled streets and squares, as there are lots of interesting shops and cafes to find.

The town centre has an old and new half hosting both independent and brand leader shops. There are two cinemas too for evening entertainment.

“Lavenham is home to many attractive old buildings…”

The coast can be easily reached, so a day trip to Walberswick for its long stretches of unspoilt beach or the nature reserves of Orford Ness should be on your holiday itinerary.

Also, pay a visit to the old town of Woodbridge to visit Sutton Hoo, the site of a mass excavation of a Saxon burial ship; the largest treasure haul on British soil and arguably the most famous. The site is managed by the National Trust and is well worth a visit for anybody with an interest in history.
