The largest town in Carmarthenshire is set by the beautiful Welsh coastline

Llanelli waters

Llanelli has a population of around 35,000 people, and can be found in the South West of Wales along the coast. It’s only 12 miles west of Swansea with its choice of evening entertainment, endless shops and eateries. The Welsh language is spoken widely in the area, as well as also being quintessentially Welsh through its long association with the coal mining industry as well as steel and tinplate manufacturing. Llanelli is also home to its proud internationally respected rugby team, the Llanelli Scarlets. The town has recently made a concerted effort to promote the arts and social enterprise with the building of a complex called Y Ffwrnes that will house a new theatre and arts centre.

There are a number of great sandy beaches in and around Llanelli. Llanelli Beach is a small beach with sea wall and low sand dunes, with stone breakwaters at each end. There is a cycle and walking path that heads up the bay to Pembrey Beach and there are other sandy beaches within walking distance too. The views over to North Gower are splendid on a nice day.

“Llanelli has all you need for a perfect Welsh holiday – beaches, countryside and culture…”

Pembrey Beach and Country Park is one of the Llanelli area’s major attractions. The beach itself stretches 7.5 miles as far as Burry Port, and is popular with families. Although there are restrictions, dogs are welcome along some sections of the sands. Located behind the sand dunes is a nature reserve, Pembrey Forest, and the rest of the country park. The park is home to a dry ski slope, miniature railway, visitor centre, pitch and putt, cycle hire, barbecue areas, a café with an ice-cream parlour, orienteering courses, an adventure playground, woodland walks and plenty of parking.

Pembrey Forest covers an area of just under 4 square miles and is legendary for its imaginative ghost stories - so much so that it was one of the locations in the TV show, Most Haunted. There have been continuous reports that the apparitions of wreckers carrying lamps towards the beach have been seen at night.

Nearby Kidwelly Castle is a likely candidate for a good afternoon out for those with an interest in history. The fort looks very dramatic as the mist rolls around it from the sea. There has been a castle on the same site since the Norman-era in the 11th century. It has seen its fair share of battles and is enjoying a period of restoration. Besides a narrow river, it really is one of Wales’s most appealing forts.
