Holidays in Malton

The foodie capital of Yorkshire

Set on the edge of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the banks of the River Derwent, Malton is a traditional market town which has become popular for its growing foodie appeal.

The historic centre of the Ryedale region, nearby lies the site of a former Roman fort as well as the neighbouring village of Old Malton, where you’ll find ancient stone houses and one of the prettiest Gilbertine priories still in use today, St Mary’s. Later on, a Norman castle was built at Malton, followed by an Elizabethan house on the same site. All that remains here, however, is the Malton Castle Garden, a community garden which continues to breathe life into this scheduled ancient monument site.

Also close to Malton you will find one of Yorkshire’s best-loved heritage sites, Castle Howard. Built in the 18th century, this magnificent country house has been kept in the Howard family for more than 300 years. Neighbouring the estate is the Yorkshire Arboretum, home to some 6000 varieties of trees and plants throughout its landscaped gardens.

Although it has a rich and varied heritage, Malton’s main appeal to visitors is its lively culinary scene. Within the town centre you’ll find a variety of ‘Made in Malton’ food producers, including a bakery, brewery, coffee roastery, gelato shop and fresh pasta maker. There’s also a wide choice of places to eat that make the most of the local produce and ingredients on offer, including the Wentworth Restaurant, who use ingredients from their very own garden and offer a carefully chosen wine list. For somewhere more relaxed, try the Chapter One Bistro, a truly local affair, and The Yard, a traditional pub with modern twists.

Visitors can get a little more involved with the culinary delights on offer at the Malton Cookery School which specialises in seafood, game and baking. A number of foodie events are also held in the town throughout the year which are always popular with both locals and tourists. Taking place each May is the Food Lovers Festival, which has hosted several big names including Levi Roots, while the Harvest Food Festival, held every September, puts an emphasis on seasonal produce with more than 60 stalls to browse. A monthly food market is also held on the second Saturday of each month, which is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
