Small Wensleydale village with a castle that was the childhood home of Richard III

Explore the countryside

Situated at the top of the magnificent Wensleydale in the North Yorkshire Dales lies the little market town of Middleham. Known for its rich horse racing legacy and history, Middleham is home to the largest cattle keep in the North of England, and a royal heritage which once saw Middleham awarded the nickname 'the Windsor of the North'.

The town’s attractive cobbled market squares are fringed with Georgian and Victorian tearooms, galleries, specialist shops, old coaching inns and a great variety of eateries. Just a short drive down the road takes you to the bustling market town of Leyburn, offering a wide choice of specialist shops, eateries and market stalls selling quality local produce.

Beautiful Yorkshire

Middleham is an excellent base from which to explore the magnificent Wensleydale and all that it has to offer, including great opportunities for walking, cycling, climbing, fishing, kayaking, steam train rides, exploring spectacular scenery and enjoying some of the best natural and built attractions in England. Within easy reach of York city, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Heritage Coast, there’s a lot to discover.

If you are travelling with children, take them to the bewitching Forbidden Corner. It’s set in a landscaped labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created within a four acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park and the Yorkshire Dales. Also visit Middleham Castle, the childhood home of the hunchbacked king, Richard III. Although in ruins, extensive remains of the fortified palace still survive. The castle has a viewing platform from which you can see across Wensleydale, and you can still see remains of the kitchen oven and a horse mill in the grounds. There are some other castles in the Yorkshire Dales too if you enjoy visiting them. Check out Richmond Castle and Barnard Castle.

No trip to Wensleydale would be complete without a trip to Wensleydale Creamery, where the world famous cheese is manufactured. It has an interactive tour and a shop where you can enjoy a cheese tasting session.

“No visit to Middleham is complete without a cheese tasting session at Wensleydale Creamery…”

Being in the depths of Wensleydale there is no shortage of picturesque walks. There’s a great circular trail that originates in the village and wiggles through Low Moor, Tugpill Park (The Forbidden Corner) and Coverdale. At just under six miles, it’s rated as moderate, so go prepared.
