A Somerset treasure tucked away between country and coast

Beach at Minehead

Minehead is a seaside town in Somerset, on the bank of the Bristol Channel, 21 miles from Taunton. Positioned at the start of the South West Coast Path, England’s longest walking trail, this relaxed community is perfectly located for exploring Exmoor and the Quantock Hills, where some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes can be found.

At Minehead’s seafront, an elegant promenade overlooks a long sandy beach, which is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing and sandcastle-building. Many of the cafes and restaurants on the seafront have amazing views of North Hill, where a 14th century church stands. The town’s historic centre is a maze of narrow streets, lined with pretty cottages. Take a stroll to the town’s historic harbour, take a cruise or explore Blenheim Gardens, featuring a bandstand, café and putting green.

A wonderful way to see the Somerset countryside surrounding Minehead is to book a trip with the West Somerset Railway. The beautifully preserved steam and diesel trains of this heritage railway take passengers on a scenic 22-mile journey from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard.

For a bite to eat in Minehead, try The Wheelhouse, an award-winning restaurant which serves full English breakfasts and a variety of classic British dishes. For a good coffee or slice of homemade cake, check out the ever-popular Driftwood Café. One of the town’s best pubs is The Old Ship Aground, where you can expect a lively atmosphere, excellent selection of local ales and extensive menu of well cooked pub dishes.

“Minehead is a traditional, British seaside resort, a stone’s throw from some of southwest England’s most beautiful countryside.”

Minehead is known as the northern gateway to Exmoor, a ruggedly beautiful region, known for its spectacular landscapes, wealth of wildlife and scattering of remote, picturesque towns and villages. Hundreds of walking paths meander their way across this windswept land, offering walkers solitude and a remarkable variety of forest, coast and hills. Exmoor is scattered with impressive historical landmarks, such as Dunster Castle, a huge structure which is now a country home with dramatic vistas and subtropical gardens. The castle and its stunning grounds, which date back to Norman times, are open for visitors to explore. Look out for the imposing medieval gatehouse and impressive tower.
