A quiet village; the last resting place of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

UK | South Coast | New Forest | Minstead
The gravestone of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Located two miles north of the popular town of Lyndhurst is Minstead, a quiet village set amongst the scenic countryside of the New Forest.

It is perhaps most famous for being the final resting place of the great Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who is buried in the cemetery of the village’s 13th century church. As he was a spiritualist, the church would only consent for him to be buried on the outer edges of the cemetery, and his grave can be found under a tree near the cemetery’s back fence.

The New Forest

Another notable historical landmark, the Rufus Stone, can also be found around a mile away from the village. The stone reputedly marks the spot where William II was killed by an arrow through the lung in 1100; some historians believe that the king was killed by one of his own men.

Within the village itself are all the amenities you need to spend a few hours here: a village shop and a pub, The Trusty Servant, which overlooks the village green. This is the ideal place to relax, serving home-cooked food and a selection of real ales. Just outside of the village is Acres Down Farm, where there is a farm shop selling a wide range of fresh farm foods, from home-grown vegetables to free-range eggs, and many other locally-sourced products. The on-site tearoom also serves a scrumptious cream tea.

Furzey Gardens is another hidden gem local to the area. Established in 1922, these informal woodland gardens are home to a collection of rare and beautiful plants from all over the world, changing with the seasons. It also displays some interesting examples of thatching, which can still be seen on many local houses.
