The Royal Forest of Dean

Mitcheldean is a thriving market town situated on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. Once a centre for the brewing industry, the old timbered houses and narrow streets are now brimming with independent shops and traditional pubs. It is an ideal base to explore the beautiful Wye Valley with a wealth of walking and cycling trails.

Not far away is the historic city of Gloucester which boasts a plethora of architectural gems, numerous visitor attractions and a busy calendar of events and festivals throughout the year. Admire the magnificent 11th century Gloucester Cathedral, the resting place of King Edward II, and a hugely popular film and television location. Take a short walk to the Gloucester Docks, a great experience for shoppers and a mecca for upmarket restaurants and bars, or discover an exhibition at one of the many art galleries and museums including the Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery, Gloucester Folk Museum, Gloucester Waterways Museum, Nature in Art and the Jet Age Museum.

Gloucester Cathedral

Spend time exploring the enchanting Royal Forest of Dean with its Sculpture Trail and famous stained-glass window, the magical Puzzlewood, or cycle tracks and zip wires for the more adventurous. The Dean Forest Railway is a relaxing way to appreciate the beauty of the forest stopping at five stations, where you’ll have time to take in a woodland walk or two, enjoy a refreshing drink in a local pub, or venture down to the Severn estuary and experience breath-taking views across the Severn at Lydney Harbour.

Investigate the unique history and heritage of the Forest of Dean at the Dean Heritage Centre. Set in five acres of beautiful woodland, there are five galleries, a reconstructed Victorian cottage, a woodland playground, a variety of animals, chainsaw carving demonstrations and a café, creating the perfect family day out.

For superb views over the Wye Valley head to Symonds Yat with its spectacular limestone outcrop. Those fuelled by adrenaline can enjoy canoeing down the rapids at great speeds, whilst those who prefer a gentler way to get closer to nature can take a picturesque boat ride down the River Wye. Between April and August, you might be lucky enough to witness a pair of peregrine falcons nesting on the cliff side.

Take an extraordinary journey underground at the ancient Clearwell Caves; dating back to the beginning of the Bronze Age, these caves have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Discover the fascinating history of iron and ochre mining in the museum or take part in an adventure 200ft underground with deep level caving activities – it’s not for the faint hearted!
