Pretty Moffat's skyline
Moffat is a spa town on the river, sheltered by the Moffat Hills where such places as Devil’s Beef Tub and Merlin’s Cave hint at the mystery and myth of Scotland from its very border. Set in the Annandale Valley, walking and other outdoor pursuits are very popular in around Moffat.
The small but beautifully-crafted town is watched over by the Moffat Ram, a sculpture atop a tower of rocks symbolising the town’s wool trade status. Moffat is also known for its old sulphur spa which lies in a little building hidden away from the rest of the town. Follow your nose as the spa gives off a strong sulphurous odour.
“Moffat is one of the UK’s only Dark Sky Towns; bring your telescope…”
If you love a hike, set out from the town in a northerly direction along the first section of the Annandale Way; it’s here you will encounter the curiously named Devil’s Beef Tub – a distinctive deep hollow where stolen sheep and cattle were once hidden. Other walks in the surrounding hills take in a portion of the Southern Upland Way and scenic River Annan. For the best chance of spotting some of the local wildlife, take a stroll around the Moffat Community Nature Reserve which is home to butterflies, dragonflies and an abundance of wild birds including waders of all description.
The town is the place to be if you love astronomy as Moffat has official Dark Sky Town status. Specific streetlights have been installed to limit light pollution which enables clear sky conditions for watching the night skies in full splendour.
