A beautiful market town within the countryside

Stroll upon the rolling hillsides of Shropshire

Wenlock is a pretty medieval market town which played an important role in the creation of the Olympic Games.

As you explore the charming, narrow streets of Much Wenlock, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Instead of the high street stores which now monopolise many of the UK’s town centres, Wenlock is full of independent antique shops, galleries and gift shops. It’s a relaxing town to walk around, with a variety of excellent cafes and restaurants, many of which make the most of the fresh local produce on their doorstep. Wenlock has a long, rich history which can be discovered in its medieval, Tudor and Georgian architecture, and the magnificent ruins of Wenlock Priory. The countryside surrounding the town is remarkably unspoilt and a range of outdoor pursuits are a stone’s throw away.

Much Wenlock’s Dr William Penny Brookes inspired the Olympic Games with his pioneering approach to physical education. To celebrate the town’s sporting heritage, one of the mascots for the 2012 London Olympics was named Wenlock. For a glimpse into the area’s fascinating sporting past, visit Much Wenlock Museum, which is packed with information and interesting artefacts.

Wenlock Priory and gardens

A short drive from Much Wenlock will take you to the impressive Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site which is known globally as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Much of the valley has been reclaimed by nature and is criss-crossed by wooded paths which are a joy to explore. Along the valley of the River Severn there are ten museums which give visitors the chance to learn more about one of the most important periods in Great Britain’s history.

For a small town, Much Wenlock is home to a surprising number of cultural events. Every April, poets are drawn to the Wenlock Poetry Festival, where workshops, readings and book-signings take place.
