A traditional Yorkshire village surrounded by some of the most stunning natural beauty in the Dales

The village of Muker

Set on the beautiful banks of the River Swale, the attractive rural village of Muker is perfect for relaxing getaways in the Swaledale region of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Originally a Norse settlement, a charming cluster of slate-roofed chocolate-box cottages are home to a village store where you can pick up essentials, a craft shop/art gallery and a welcoming local pub. The Farmers Arms is the perfect place to take the weight off your feet after a brisk walk through the surrounding countryside, with a roaring open fire, hearty homecooked meals, and refreshing local ales. Enjoy a tempting array of traditional Yorkshire baked goods in the friendly village tearoom and browse local crafts in the Swaledale Woollens shop, including hand-knitted woollen wear made with wool from the distinctive black-faced Swaledale sheep.

Once a prosperous agricultural hub, the village is today a mecca for walkers looking to explore Yorkshire by foot, and nature lovers with its huge assortment of flora and fauna to admire. Bring your camera and enjoy a wonderful selection of scenic local walks, including the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast long-distance walking and cycling trail. One of the most scenic local hikes is the famous circular route around Kisdon Hill which crosses spectacular flower meadows and passes four waterfalls, before meandering around Kisdon Gorge and up the valley to the picturesque village of Keld.

As well as lots of opportunities for outdoor adventure, there is an abundance of exciting attractions to discover locally too. In the nearby market town of Hawes, the Wensleydale Creamery is must-visit if you are a fan of the famous crumbly Wensleydale cheese – here you can see it being made before sampling the goods in the cheese-tasting room or enjoying a thick slice alongside a delicious ploughman’s in the restaurant. The Dales Countryside Museum and Ropemakers are two more attractions in the town, both of which highlight the fascinating history of the region.

There are several particularly good times to visit Muker throughout the year. In September, the village hosts its Grand Annual Show which is a celebration of its agricultural roots and traditions, featuring sheepdog trials, fell races and children's activities. Or if you visit between late May and early July, you can admire the flower-rich hay meadows which surround the village as they burst into a riot of colour. The Muker Meadows are of international importance and are carefully protected - 12 are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and four were named as Coronation Meadows by HRH The Prince of Wales. Some of the public footpaths take you right through the middle of these stunning habitats.
