A popular seaside resort with long sandy beaches

UK | East of England | Norfolk | Mundesley

Mundesley is a laid-back resort with a nice selection of shops and cafes, 20 miles northeast of Norwich, and home to one of Norfolk’s best sandy beaches.

Since Victorian times, this laid-back community has been a popular place to visit thanks to its long, sandy beach, which is still a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming and picnics. The beach is backed by rows of brightly painted beach huts and at low tide, a maze of rock pools is revealed where you can hunt for crabs.

The village centre is a lovely place to explore, with a range of independent businesses on well-kept streets, decorated with hanging baskets full of flowers.

For a glimpse into the area’s fascinating past, visit Mundesley Maritime Museum, located at The Lees overlooking the beach. This low-key attraction is housed in a 1920s lookout and is believed to be one of England’s smallest museums. Photos, prints and artefacts offer an insight into the area’s fishing trade, and there’s also an interesting collection of fossils.

One of the village’s most popular family attractions is Adventure Island, a crazy golf course which is a fun way to while away a couple of hours.

Favourites include the crab salad and hearty Sunday roast. For a good coffee or full English breakfast, try the ever-popular Village Café on the High Street.

From Mundesley, many of Norfolk’s top tourist destinations are easily reached. Just down the road is the lovely seaside town of Cromer, where you can enjoy fresh seafood at one of a number of excellent restaurants. A little further afield are the Norfolk Broads, a stunning network of lakes and rivers, famous for their bird life.
