Pleasant village in the Cairngorms, home of the famous Highland Folk Museum

Highland Folk Museum Britain's first open-air museum

Newtonmore is a village in the Cairngorms National Park located close to the geographical centre of Scotland. It’s a good base for exploring the natural beauty of the Central Highlands.

The Wildcat Trail, an extension to the Speyside Way runs by Newtonmore. It is an orbital wooded track that follows the course of the River Spey, and takes in open heathland and moorland, and forest woodland glens. There are some steep sections, but the path is wide and open so if you prepare for a good walk, you’ll be fine. The trail can be walked in whole or in sections, it is waymarked with a wildcat decal. Be sure to stop into the Wildcat Centre on Newtonmore High Street.

Another place of interest located in central Newtonmore is the Highland Folk Museum. It’s one of the best open-air museums in the UK, with a large collection of exhibits and over 30 historic buildings, furnished to their respective time period – some of which have been moved from their original site, others recreated on-site. The mile-long site features a 1700s settlement and ends at a 1930s working croft. The main horde of historical artefacts is housed in the Am Fasgadh Building. The museum is located deep within some beautiful Highlands scenery.

The Highland sport of shinty is practised by the locals here too, and there’s a local league. The sport is similar to hockey, bando or hurling, and there’s even an ice-borne version called bandy – an obscure fact to store away until pub quiz night. Newtonmore may also be familiar to some visitors because it’s the former setting of the popular TV show, Monarch of the Glen that was broadcast between 1999-2005.

“Newtonmore is an ideal base from which to explore the Central Highlands…”

Newtonmore is a good foodie spot too, selling the best in Highland dishes sourced from local produce. Try the Highlander Hotel and accompany your meal with one of a selection of fine local malt whiskies from renowned distilleries like Dalwhinnie and Glenfiddich. The closest VisitScotland iCentre is in Aviemore, so pay a visit to gather some local tips and useful information.
