Par holidays: a small yet charming village close to Cornwall's popular attractions

Par Sands beach

Located on the south coast of Cornwall sits this pleasant village which is also known for its extensive dock side. The village also has a significant heritage in the local quarrying and mining industry and still today exports china clay, which is mainly used for papermaking.

Par or ‘An Porth’ as it is known in Cornish is a small seaside village that offers you a great base to explore South Cornwall as it is perfectly situated between St Austell and Fowey, both packed with things to do and see. A great place to visit on your stay is the sandy spot of Par Sands. The beach does have a dramatic contrast, with the clay works at one end and luscious countryside at the other, but its stretch of golden sands makes a great place for walking and enjoying the sunshine. The village also has a scattering of shops, a post office and pubs including The Par Inn and The Welcome Home Inn.

Par

Staying in the village offers you the chance to enjoy a range of popular attractions close by. Just two miles away you’ll find the well-known botanical attraction of the Eden Project which can also be reached by foot through the Luxulyan Valley. Another popular spot to learn the history and heritage of Cornwall’s Mining history is at the Wheal Martyn Museum near St Austell. This location is great for the whole family with audio-visual tours, a children’s play area and adventure trail. There is also a tea room, plenty of picnic spots and a gift shop to take home a memento of your holiday.

Another beautiful spot nestled between Par and the harbour spot of Fowey is the Gribbin Peninsula. Here you’ll find the secluded destination of Polkerris, which is a favourite for beach lovers and people looking to enjoy delicious food at the Rashleigh Arms. Further round the bay, the popular holiday location of Fowey is a great place for a day out. Wander the winding streets throughout the town and indulge in fish and chips along the harbourside whilst watching the boats bobbing in the waters. Or perhaps head along the coast to Mevagissey and Charlestown to discover a charming heritage and the harbour from well-known TV series Poldark.
