Royal Burgh on the River Tweed with a lively arts scene

Peebles riverside

Peebles is a Royal Burgh in the borders of Scotland. It was King David II that granted the town its noble status in 1367 and visitors can still see examples of building ageing back to around this time. Resting on the banks of the River Tweed, Peebles combines Victorian architecture with the perfect backdrop of the striking Scottish mountains. Many visits are made by tourists the world over to enjoy its unspoilt character.

The River Tweed around Peebles is world renowned for its salmon fishing and the town has a strong association with the river. It’s Latin town motto, “Contra nando incrementum’ translated means, “Increase by swimming against the current,” which is a fine sentiment to encourage the sons and daughters of Peebles by.

The renowned Arts Festival grows in stature each year as does the Peebles Food Festival. Shoppers rejoice: Peebles has the earnt the accolade of being ranked as ‘Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotand, and second in the UK.
