Home to the magnificent British Red Kites

UK | Wales | Mid Wales | Rhayader
Tintern Abbey

The lovely small market town of Rhayader on the River Wye is the perfect base to enjoy the wonderful surrounding countryside. Home to the amazing dams and reservoirs of the Elan and Claerwen Valleys, there are many great days out to be enjoyed by all the family.

You will find many walks and trails around Rhayader which is perfectly situated under the Cambrian mountain range. The Gilfach nature reserve is especially lovely - you can spot otters, wild salmon leaping out of the water and beautiful butterflies. Rhayader isn’t known as the wildlife centre of Wales for nothing!

Elan Valley

Follow the River Wye as it flows through the mountains, or head to the top of the mountains which are full of heather and make for a marvellous place to stop and reflect.

Birdwatchers may know the area as the last place that the British red kite could be found while on the verge of becoming extinct. This bird has now been reintroduced successfully to other areas of the UK but you can still find it here, living alongside other wildlife such as ravens, buzzards and otters.

You can visit the Gigrin Farm Kite Centre which is famous for its daily feeding of the birds – you can enjoy this spectacle yourself as you watch hundreds of red kites swoop down for a meal each day. A wonderful photo opportunity!

Hop aboard Cambrian Safaris which also welcomes your pet, and have a look at a selection of things this area has to offer. The Elan and Claerwen Valleys are great for mountain biking, cycling and walking with or without your furry friend. There are so many walks to discover, just don’t forget your walking boots!

Explore the town and you will find a variety of independent shops, selling all sorts of things from arts and crafts to specialist foods and gifts. Sample local Welsh dishes at one of the local restaurants or pop into a traditional pub for a typical warm Welsh welcome.

“Legend has it that King Arthur’s dog Gafallt left his paw print on a stone somewhere on Carngafallt…”

If you want a whistle-stop tour of the town, take the Rhayader Town Trail which points out the best spots in town. Suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs though steep in places, it allows you to see the sights at a leisurely pace. Also pop into the CARAD Rhayader museum and gallery to discover the history of the town for yourself.

The Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir is a spectacular Gothic Victorian mansion; you can take a guided tour of the house or visit the gardens. And don’t forget a trip south to the famous ruins of Tintern Abbey, something you must see before leaving Wales!
