A historic waterside market town; the western gateway to the New Forest

UK | South Coast | New Forest | Ringwood
The New Forest

Dating back to 1226, the market town of Ringwood stands on the banks of the River Avon and on the western fringes of the New Forest.

A market is held in Ringwood every Wednesday morning, and the town is a delight to browse even on non-market days, as there are plenty of independent and modern shops to browse. Much of the town remains unspoilt from when it was built centuries ago. Make sure you take a wander down West Street to enjoy the views out over the River Avon from the three-arched stone bridge, and discover the many historic buildings, which include the Meeting House, Monmouth House and the Saxon parish church.

Ringwood town centre

Ringwood is perfectly placed if you are after a walking holiday, as it is a town passed through by the Avon Valley Path. This route covers 34 miles of countryside stretching all the way from Salisbury in Wiltshire to Christchurch Priory on the south coast, following the Avon river the whole time. For more manageable walks, the route has been split into five smaller sections.

One of Ringwood’s most popular attractions is the Ringwood Brewery. Established in 1978, the brewery offers tours of its premises, along with a complementary sample of one of their beers. At the on-site store you can pick up a bottle to take home or even some more unusual merchandise. Just outside of Ringwood is another top attraction, Liberty’s Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre, where visitors can meet birds of prey, reptiles and insects.

Further afield there are plenty of interesting towns and villages to visit. These include the village of Burley, which retains a period charm and is home to many interesting stories, and Brockenhurst, where animals roam freely and graze on the forest land.
