Pretty Sherborne cottages

Home to two castles, Sherborne has a fascinating history to explore. Bursting with culture, this lively town has many independent shops, boutiques and galleries, as well as impressive landmarks.

Wander through the narrow streets and admire the old grey stone buildings scattered among timber-framed houses. The town’s markets are perfect for picking up a bargain and some tasty local food. Check out the Antiques and Flea Market on a Saturday, the Pannier Market every Thursday and Saturday and the Farmer’s Market every third Friday of the month.

“Sherborne is a charming market town on the edge of the stunning Blackmore Vale.”

One of the town’s most famous landmarks is Sherborne Castle . With 42 acres of immaculate parkland and grounds, the castle showcases intricate decorative styles from over 400 years of history. Explore art collections, family artefacts and archaeological finds from the old medieval castle in the cellars. This makes for a great family day out, too. So don’t forget to bring a picnic. Sherborne’s other famous heritage site is Sherborne Abbey. Known as the cathedral of Dorset, Sherborne Abbey is a beautiful structure and is well worth a visit.

Just a short distance away, you’ll find Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty . Perfect for walkers and cyclists, explore the spectacular Dorset landscape. From high chalk cliffs to seemingly boundless countryside, there’s no better place to enjoy a ramble.

Sherborne Abbey

If you’ve worked up an appetite roaming through Dorset, there are many places to enjoy a delicious meal. The Dining Room is set near the beautiful Abbey, and creates sensational British food. Try the confit greedy carver duck leg with braised red cabbage and parmentier potatoes, or the goats cheese fritter with Dorset leaves and tomato dressing. For a more informal dining experience, head to The Mitre Inn. Tuck into a beer battered haddock or a classic sirloin steak with all the trimmings. Another popular choice is The Eastbury Hotel and Restaurant . Serving delectable dishes with tasty local produce, expect dishes such as West Country mussels with Orchard Pig cider, basil crème fraiche and focaccia or chicken liver parfait with truffle brioche and damson jelly.

If you’re venturing out of Sherborne, you’re not too far from Yeovil, Shaftesbury and Dorchester. For a spot of retail therapy, hit Dorchester’s bustling centre.
