South Devon village with a distinctive shingle beach

Slapton Beach

Slapton is a small village famous for the gorgeous shingle beach nearby. The closest town is Kingsbridge, known as the ‘hub of the wheel’ – referring to its central position in the South Hams region of South Devon.

Slapton Sands overlooks Start Bay and has a chequered and poignant history. Today, sections of the ridge are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The beach does not consist of sand, but of small smooth pebbles. The beach which is technically a coastal bar, was the site of a long series of World War II exercises. A Sherman tank that was sunk at one stage during these sorties was since recovered and now stands on the road behind the beach at nearby Torcross.

Places of historical interest around Slapton include the Collegiate Chantry of St Mary, founded in 1373 by Sir Guy de Brian. The Tower Inn and West Tower remain and the tower has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. There are also several lovely pubs and restaurants in and around the village. For a wider choice, you may want to visit Kingsbridge, which has all the amenities you could need during a South Hams holiday.

The Sherman Tank

To the east of South Hams is Torquay. Torquay’s idyllic coastal position makes it a perfect base to explore South Devon’s beaches. Visit the beaches of Maidencombe, Barracombe, Paignton and St Mary’s for a day by the sea. You can also take the ferry from Torquay to Brixham. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing break or a more active holiday, Torquay has it all. For families, pay a visit to Kents Cavern . As one of the most important Stone Age cave sites in Europe, Kents Cavern is a mysterious prehistoric cave. Take a step back in time as you wander through the labyrinth of caverns. For a peek into underwater life, visit Living Coasts Zoo and Aquarium. Home to penguins, fur seals and other UK marine life, this is a fantastic family day out.
