The Gateway to the World

Southampton at sunset

Situated on the south coast of England, Southampton is famous for both its port and for being the closest city to the beautiful New Forest. Its association as the departure point of the maiden voyage of the Titanic brings guests from all over the world to the Seacity Museum, which brings the city’s rich maritime history to life.

Southampton counts on an interesting aviation and military history, famous for the maiden flight of the Spitfire and for also being one of the departure points for D-Day. Henry V marched his troops though the Westgate to sail to the battle of Agincourt and The Mayflower took Pilgrims to America in 1620 from the West Quay. Southampton Castle, built in the 12th Century along with merchants’ houses such as King John’s House and Canute’s Palace are evident reminders of a more prosperous time.

The Bargate

Take a tour around the town walls, including the 15th century God’s House Tower which stands at the entrance to the Old Town – sadly many of the medieval buildings previously inside the walls have disappeared or are in ruins but you can still see remnants all over the city. Make sure that you visit the Bargate, a Grade I listed medieval gatehouse originally built as the main entrance to the city. While away an afternoon at Tudor House and Garden, one of the most important buildings in the city – encompassing over 900 years of history, it tells amazing stories of its varied residents.

If all of the sight-seeing makes you hungry, Southampton has a variety of places to eat. Thaikhun is not only a Thai restaurant, but is filled to the brim with hand-picked bric-a-brac, delicious street food and cocktails with a Thai spin. The Real Greek offers a wide selection of Meze to share with friends or head to the award-winning Handmade Burger Co. which offers ethically sourced Scottish beef. For something a little more elegant, step back in time with a high tea at the Edwardian ChariTeas Tearooms or for a sparkling evening out, Oceana Nightclub, and Banana Wharf in Ocean Village are also popular.

"Southampton has 100s of shops to lose yourself in..."

Don’t leave without visiting all the delights that the surrounding areas have to offer. Pop over for a day’s sailing to the Isle of Wight or explore the beauty of the New Forest - drive slowly through and watch the wild ponies grazing, or park up the car and take a stroll through the Forest – they are used to visitors! The city of Winchester is only 12 miles away - this former seat of King Alfred the Great with its stunning cathedral is a wonderful day out.
