Holidays in Southport

One of the most popular seaside resorts in the north-west

UK | North of England | Lancashire | Southport
Southport Pier

Boasting 22 miles of coastline, Southport has become one of the north-west’s premier holiday destinations and promises a classic seaside holiday with plenty to do.

Southport’s beach is long and sandy, and, as well as offering a great day out for all the family, is a gateway to a variety of nature and wildlife. It’s home to one of the largest areas of undeveloped dunes in the UK, while you can also wander up the Ribble Estuary from here, or if you’d rather sit back and relax you can see many different wading birds and gulls on the beach itself. The beach also has the country’s oldest iron pier, where Funland, with its traditional amusements and carousel, greets you at the entrance. Surprisingly, the tide approaches the beach only on very rare occasions.

For a more thrilling family day out, check out Pleasureland, found between the beach and the town centre, with rollercoasters, go-karts and more to ride on. Alongside the amusement park, you can also take a trip from here on the Lakeside Miniature Railway. For some wet and wild fun, head to Splashworld on the esplanade, with water flumes, rapids and a relaxing bubble spa.

If you’re a golf fan, you’ll be glad to hear that Southport is part of England’s Golf Coast, and is home to a choice of seven championship courses. Among them is Royal Birkdale, which hosted the Open Championship in 2008, making it truly world-class.

One of the best places to get in touch with nature in the local area is at the nearby Martin Mere reserve, where more than a hundred kinds of rare and endangered water birds, as well as otters and beavers, can be seen in these vast wetlands. Thousands of ducks, swans and geese flock here in the winter, while in the spring, the flamingo chicks are born.

If you’re after a quirky place to visit, Southport is home to the British Lawnmower Museum, a unique celebration of a Great British invention. With more than 200 exhibits to see, including lawnmowers owned by royalty, it’s the country’s biggest tribute to garden machinery.

The Atkinson is another excellent place to visit if the weather is not so great, offering a one-stop centre for arts and culture. Inside you’ll find an art gallery, featuring touring exhibitions, an interactive museum, gift shop, tourist information centre and café. At the theatre and studio, you can watch a concert, theatre performance or some stand-up comedy.

Throughout the year there are a variety of events happening that are bound to keep visitors entertained.
