Red-brick village at the fringe of the Cotswolds

The bywaters of Stretton-on-Fosse

Stretton-on-Fosse is a small quiet village, characterised by its interesting houses built of Cotswold stone and locally-made red brick. It is found close to the Warwickshire-Gloucestershire border at the fringe of the Cotswolds Hills.

There has been a settlement in the area since Roman times. Commercial excavations have unearthed important graves dating back to Roman-British and Anglo-Saxon periods. Going back to the Domesday Book census, a manor house that makes up part of Stretton House still exists. The village mainly consists of farms and a handful of churches, pubs and local shops.

There are quite a few attractions within a short driving distance, like Batsford Arboretum, Cotswold Falconry Centre, Bourton House Garden, Hidcote Manor Garden, Chastelton House, Broadway Tower and Secret Bunker.

The countryside around Stretton-on-Fosse

Also for daytrips, plan an outing to Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon for all things William Shakespeare, or the twin Cathedral city of Coventry, the ancient abbey and battle field walks at Tewkesbury, with its excellent pair of transport and car museums.

Dating back to the 17th century, Batsford Arboretum is an amazing collection of trees and bamboo collected in the 19th century by its then owner, the first Lord Redesdale. Most of the trees and some of the bamboo are his original plantings. Batsford Arboretum is recognised as having the best collection of trees, plants, bamboo and shrubs from the far east. There is now a gift shop and visitor centre and dogs on a lead are welcome to explore this beautiful and peaceful spectacle.

“Well-located for exploring the Cotswolds and the West Midlands…”

Arguably, the most famous town in the region, Stratford-upon-Avon, is a guaranteed fun day out and education for fans of the bard, William Shakespeare. Be sure to visit a few of the museums, including his former home and Anne Hathaway’s house too, his wife. If you have time, a play at the RSC Theatre should be a part of your holiday plans. The programme of quality Shakespeare production is one of the very best outside of the capital.
