Holidays in Thame

Oxfordshire with close ties to a famous TV show

Nearby Iffley Lock

In the heart of Oxfordshire sits the quintessentially English town of Thame. The picturesque market town hosts an impressive selection of independent boutiques, boasting interesting and often unique high-quality items. There are convenient links to Oxford, London and Aylesbury as the town is close to the national road network.

Visit in September to experience one of the town’s major attractions: the Thame and Oxfordshire County Show, which dates back 130 years.

There is a good spread of varied eateries in the town such as tearooms, country pubs, and Michelin-star restaurants. Thame itself has a long, wide high street, which blends black and white buildings, cobbles and a traditional clock tower that evokes a bygone era.

Eagle-eyed TV fans may recognise some of Thame’s locales from popular series, Midsomer Murders. If you go to the Town Hall, you can pick up a leaflet to find out where some of the most frequently featured buildings are to be found.

Visiting walkers and cyclists like the Phoenix Trail, a traffic-free route between Princes Risborough and Thame. There is also access for walkers and horse riders to join the Ridgeway at Bledlow too.

The Ridgeway

The Ridgeway is a long-distance walk, just shy of 100 miles in length, that runs from Ivinghoe Beacon (near Dunstable) to just south of Avebury.

The Players Theatre is one of the only live entertainment venues in town – check out the programme for more details.

Nature lovers can also visit the Cuttle Brook Reserve which is a short walk from the centre of Thame. There are several trails through a variety of habitats with plants and trees that change throughout the seasons.

Attractions in the wider area include Waddesdon Manor and the Chiltern Open Air Museum and are easily reached. The former is a stately home, built in the late 19th century for the Baron de Rothschild. Today, you can stroll around the vast grounds, that include an aviary, open parklands, and acres of formal gardens.

Chiltern Open Air Museum is a unique experience in that it is a collection of buildings that have been rebuilt on the site to save them from demolition and to keep them for posterity. Everything from a wrought iron public toilet to a gigantic farm yard has been gathered together.

It’s a great day for those interested in architecture and seeing examples of forgotten styles of formerly commonplace buildings. There are also live events and animals at the museum, turning it into a fun day out for the whole family.
