Holidays in Tonbridge

A Kent market town with a tranquil country park

UK | South Coast | Kent | Tonbridge
Haysden Country Park

Set in the north of Kent within reach of the beautiful town of Sevenoaks and thriving hub of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge is a gem set in pleasant countryside. The River Medway winds through the heart of it, connected to its myriad of tributaries and lakes that make this region a wildlife haven and a destination for fishing.

Tonbridge’s busy high street is home to the town’s ancient mott and bailey castle, Tonbridge station which has a direct line to London Charing Cross, and a variety of independent shops and delightful restaurants for eating out during your break. Tonbridge Castle is a wonderful place to begin your holiday adventures as you travel back in time to its 11th-century origins and Richard Fitzgilbert who first built a castle on this site.

Just west of town, Haysden Country Park dominates the landscape. This nature reserve is an idyllic attraction to explore, whether you plan to search for creepy crawlies with the children, stretch your legs on a dog walk, or birdwatch in this beauty spot. Haysden Country Park stretches for 65 hectares encompassing the River Medway and two charming lakes, and provides wheelchair-friendly paths, a children’s play area and picnic areas so everyone can enjoy a fun day outside in nature.

Royal Tunbridge Wells

Tonbridge is also located on the edge of the Kent High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so any keen hikers and ramblers, pull on your walking boots and get to know the trails and pathways that criss-cross this scenic destination, using your Tonbridge holiday cottage as your base. There are cycle trails too along disused railway lines and two National Cycle Network routes that path through this region not to mention the Sustrans’ Tudor Trail that begins in Tonbridge.

Take a trip 8 miles south to Royal Tunbridge Wells where you can hop aboard The Spa Valley Railway, which provides a far more relaxing way to see the sights, or explore the town centre and The Pantiles, filled with art galleries, delicatessens and boutiques.

Penshurst Place is a magnificent stately home 6 miles west of Tonbridge with 11 acres of gardens to roam, including an Adventure Playground and Woodland Trail set up just for families. Stroll around the halls of this impressive building and uncover a wealth of artefacts gathered throughout the years, before heading to The Porcupine Pantry for a bite to eat.

“Soak up idyllic parkland and rushing waterways in the Kent countryside…”

Meanwhile, 8 miles east, kids can have a wonderful time at The Hop Farm – a family-friendly attraction with animals to meet, music events throughout the year, and what is believed to be the largest collection of oast houses in the world.
