Heaven for foodies on the stunning River Exe

The river at Topsham

Topsham is a historic town in South Devon, on the east of the River Exe as it flows south towards the estuary at Exmouth. Originally a busy port and a shipbuilding town, Topsham still has a seafaring atmosphere but there is a more modern, and eclectic side to discover too.

You can see evidence of Topsham’s history as you walk along the Strand, where you will discover Dutch-influenced 17th-century merchant houses that give a hint of the town’s industrious past. One of these buildings houses the Topsham Museum where you can learn more about the town’s past as well as seeing exhibitions about the actress Vivian Leigh who has ties with Topsham through marriage.

However, if you’re interested in the town’s more modern side, there is plenty to see and do for all ages on a holiday to Topsham. The town has earned a reputation as a foodie haven, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafés to dine out at – many along the picturesque waterfront. Plus, there are many independent producers selling their wares, perfect for picking up an authentic taste of Devon to remind you of your travels when you’re back home.

For nature lovers, Topsham is a great destination for a holiday in the fresh Devon air, as its position on the estuary means there are plenty of walks to enjoy through wildlife-rich countryside. Follow the Goat Walk from Topsham Quay, along the River Exe to the RSPB Bowling Green Marsh Nature Reserve at the Exe Estuary. As well as enjoying the scenery, you might spot birds like avocets, lapwings and egrets.

Or, you could take the Exe Estuary Trail– a flat, traffic-free trail suitable for hikers, dog-walkers and cyclists that runs from Dawlish, around the Exe Estuary, through Topsham and out to Exmouth. It makes a great family day out in the fresh air, where you can take in the stunning scenery of the area and maybe pop into a pub or café for some refreshments.

Boats on the River Exe

For a highly memorable activity, you could take the ‘Topsham to Turf’ passenger ferry which runs across the Exe from Topsham to the Turf Locks Inn. Take a picturesque walk or simply enjoy a pint of local ale and admire the scenic river views before making the return boat trip back.

Topsham also makes a great base for exploring the wider South Devon area. The bustling city of Exeter is only 4.5 miles away; explore the stunning cathedral, wide variety of independent shops and restaurants, or catch a show at one of the city’s theatres. And if it’s a day at the beach you’re looking for, Budleigh Salterton is within 10 miles and is a renowned sea swimming spot if you fancy a dip.
