Leafy Warwickshire village close to Stratford-upon-Avon

UK | South West | Cotswolds | Weston-on-Avon
The RSC at Stratford

As the name suggests, Weston-on-Avon can be found along the banks of the River Avon. It’s next door to the similarly named Welford-on-Avon and shares many of its general amenities. The village benefits from its close proximity to Stratford-upon-Avon, with its rich history and famous associations with 16th century playwright, William Shakespeare.

Stratford-upon-Avon is a major tourist hot-spot. Holidaymakers travel from all over the world to visit the birthplace of one of our finest playwrights. Everywhere you go you will see Shakespeare-themed cafes and gift shops. Perhaps the best place to go to get into the spirit is to book a ticket for a play at the RSC, which has a regular programme of his plays produced by one of the most prestigious theatre companies in the world.

Another great place to visit is Shakespeare’s Birthplace, situated on Henley Street in the centre of town. The restored house works as an interactive museum with actors recreating scenes from his life, educational tours and exhibits from his life. There’s also a space for themed exhibitions that revolved around the theme of the Bard’s writing.

Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust owns several other buildings of historical interest in the town such as Anne Hathaway’s house (Anne Hathaway was Shakespeare’s wife). Other places to visit on a day out in Stratford-upon-Avon are Shakespeare’s New Place, Mary Arden’s Farm and Hall’s Croft – some of which are a short distance outside of town.

“A perfect base for Shakespeare fans who’d like a rural setting…”

Weston-on-Avon is also within decent driving distance from the town of Tewkesbury, with its 12th century Norman abbey, one of the best intact examples in the country. The town is also surrounded by historical battlefields from the English Civil War. A great place to wander along the river banks and amongst the old water mills, it’s also a good place for antique shopping too.

For the best shopping, within driving distance of Weston-on-Avon, try Royal Leamington Spa, where brand name favourites rub shoulders with boutiques throughout the elaborate and uniform grid of streets flanked by tall Victorian-style white buildings. Some of the best restaurants and pubs in the West Midlands are open for business here too. There’s also Warwick Arts Centre (at the nearby university) for a diverse range of off-mainstream theatre, music and film.
