With its glorious sandy beach and laid-back atmosphere, it’s no wonder Westward Ho! is one of North Devon’s best-loved resorts.

Westward Ho! is a seaside village, facing west into the sweeping Bideford Bay. Its unusual name comes from a Charles Kingsley novel, which was set in nearby Bideford and published in the 1800s. When the book became a best seller, the opportunity to develop tourism in the area was seized and the only place in the UK to have an exclamation mark in its name was born. Westward Ho! became a popular Victorian resort and is still a magnet for visitors looking for sun, sea and surf. The sandy beach, backed by a pebble ridge stretches uninterrupted from the village towards the Taw and Torridge estuaries. Surfing is popular and a number of schools teach novices how to catch their first wave. The village itself stretches all the way down to the seafront, with surf shops, cafes, restaurants, a small supermarket and a couple of pubs. Westward Ho!’s laid-back atmosphere and beautiful position on the Atlantic coast make it the perfect place to while away a few days by the sea.

With its gently sloped, sandy beach and mellow waves, Westward Ho! is one of Devon's best places to learn to surf. Along the seafront, a number of surf schools and shops offer equipment to buy and hire. A good option is North Devon Surf School, one of the longest-running surf businesses in the region, and the only one in the village to offer hot showers and changing rooms. Book a lesson and you’ll be handed a wetsuit, board and all the expert advice you need to hit the waves.

For a fun, family day out, visit Pebble Ridge Adventure Golf and Go-Karts. Racers have the option of a solo car, or a slower, two-man model. The golf course is an amusing attraction, where family members can battle it out on an 18-hole course which meanders through a maze of pirate ships , barrels and masts.

If you’re after a bite to eat in Westward Ho!, try The Pig On the Hill, a stylish pub, a couple of miles up the road from the village. Devon steaks, fresh sea food, pizzas and a range of tasty pub classics are on the menu. There’s also an outstanding choice of local beers and ales, and a lovely terrace for when the sun’s shining. Another good option is The Blue and Green, an informal restaurant with amazing views across the beach and delicious, wood-fired pizzas.

Westward Ho! is an ideal base for exploring the spectacular North Devon coast. Just down the road is Bideford, a historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge. A few miles west is the famous fishing village of Clovelly, with its ancient cobbled streets and harbour.
