England’s ancient capital with gorgeous architecture and history at every turn

River flowing through Winchester

Winchester is an ancient cathedral city where you’ll discover pretty riverside walks, centuries of history and a variety of interesting shops, restaurants and cafes.

Winchester is located in the valley of the River Itchen, in Hampshire, and is the ancient capital of England. With its elegant Elizabethan and Regency buildings, winding, narrow streets and towering cathedral, Winchester is undoubtedly one of the most architecturally interesting cities in the country. The majestic River Itchen rushes through the city, and is home to a group of increasingly famous otters. CCTV has been set up on the river which is triggered by the otters’ movements. Footage of these elusive creatures is then played on a big screen at Winchester City Mill.

Winchester is famous for its connection to King Arthur, whose famous Round Table, inscribed by Henry VIII, hangs on the wall in the Great Hall, which can be explored for free. Another must-see is Winchester Cathedral, one of the country’s biggest and most impressive cathedrals. The spectacular Gothic interior of this colossal structure is home to several stunning artworks and one of the world’s longest naves.

You’ll also find the grave of Jane Austen, caskets containing the bones of Saxon kings and intricate medieval floor-tiles.

For peace and tranquillity in the heart of the city, head to the River Itchen. You don’t have to walk far to find yourself surrounded by meadows. The short stroll, south out of the city, inspired Keats to write Ode to Autumn. The route passes the magnificent Wolvesey Castle and Winchester College, and ends at the Hospital of St Cross and Almhouse of Noble Poverty.

Winchester has a reputation for good food. In the city centre, you’ll find award-winning fine dining restaurants, traditional pubs, pizzerias, cafes and plenty more. No. 5 Bridge Street is an elegant bar and restaurant, which serves delicious, British food, made from the best local produce.

Alternatively, try Cote, a new restaurant where you can enjoy some of the region’s best French food and an excellent wine selection. Another Winchester favourite is El Sabio, a lively and reasonably priced Tapas bar, which serves a variety of authentic dishes. If you’re after a pot of tea and a slice of homemade cake, look no further than Nicola’s Tea Shop, a homely café where you can settle down on comfy sofas and even watch an old film.
